MCP is an open standard, introduced by Anthropic in late 2024, that lets AI models like Claude connect to external tools and data sources — a database, a file system, a GitHub repository, a project management app — through a common protocol instead of a custom integration for every tool.

›What is an MCP server?

An MCP server is the piece that exposes one specific tool or data source to any compatible AI client — for example, a Postgres MCP server lets Claude or Cursor query a database directly. Anyone can publish one; it's just a program that speaks the MCP protocol.

›Why does every MCP server need a security score?

Because any developer can publish one, quality and safety vary widely — a server can request filesystem access, execute arbitrary commands, or handle credentials. The security score is computed from real repository signals (permissions requested, authentication, maintenance activity) so you can tell a well-maintained, carefully scoped server from a risky one before you install it.
